What Is a PSB File?
PSB (Photoshop Big) is Adobe Photoshop's Large Document Format, designed for images that exceed the size limits of the standard PSD format. While PSD files are limited to a maximum canvas size of 30,000 x 30,000 pixels and a maximum file size of 2 GB, PSB removes those constraints and supports documents up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels with file sizes up to 4 exabytes. PSB is used for extremely large composite images, panoramic photographs, billboard-sized artwork, and multi-channel professional imaging projects.
Like PSD, a PSB file stores all layers, masks, and adjustments non-destructively. PSB files are not supported by any consumer image viewer and require Adobe Photoshop or Affinity Photo to open natively. Our free PSB converter uses the ag-psd JavaScript library to decode PSB files directly in your browser, converting them to JPG, PNG, WebP, or any other supported format without any upload or Photoshop license.
PSB vs PSD: Key Differences
File Size and Canvas Limits
PSD is limited to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels and 2 GB. PSB supports up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels. If you are working on panoramas, very high-resolution photography, or large format print artwork, Photoshop automatically saves in PSB format when those limits are reached.
Compatibility
PSD has broader third-party application support (GIMP, Affinity Photo, Sketch). PSB support is more limited, primarily restricted to Adobe Photoshop CS and later. Converting PSB to PNG or TIFF is often necessary to make files accessible to other team members who do not have Photoshop.
Best Output Format
For large PSB files, TIFF is often the best archival output format as it also supports very large dimensions losslessly. For web sharing, PNG or WebP preserve quality well. For delivery to clients who just need to view the final image, JPG offers the smallest file size.
Frequently Asked Questions About PSB Files
Why did Photoshop save my file as PSB instead of PSD?
Photoshop automatically switches to PSB format when your document exceeds the PSD limits (30,000px per dimension or 2 GB file size). This happens with large panoramas, high-resolution composites, and documents with many large layers.
Can I convert a PSB file without Photoshop?
Yes. Our free browser-based PSB converter uses the ag-psd JavaScript library to read PSB files and convert them to JPG, PNG, WebP, and more without requiring any Adobe software or server upload.
Are my PSB files uploaded to a server?
No. All PSB conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device, are never stored on any server, and are never accessible to anyone else.
