What Is a HEIC File?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format used by Apple on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 11 and later. It is a container format based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard developed by MPEG. HEIC files use the HEVC (H.265) video codec to compress still images, achieving roughly half the file size of equivalent JPEG photos at the same visual quality. A single HEIC file can also store multiple images, depth maps, and HDR data in a single container.
Despite its superior compression, HEIC is not natively supported on Windows, most Android devices, or web browsers. When you transfer iPhone photos to a PC or try to upload them to websites, they often cannot be read without conversion. Converting HEIC to JPG or PNG is the most reliable way to share iPhone photos across all platforms and applications.
How Our HEIC Converter Works on Any Browser
Most HEIC converters require you to upload your photos to a cloud server, which raises serious privacy concerns. Our HEIC converter is different: it decodes HEIC files entirely within your browser using heic2any, a pure-JavaScript HEIC decoder that runs on any browser including Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on Windows.
Step 1: HEIC Decoding via heic2any
When you drop a HEIC or HEIF file, the heic2any JavaScript library decodes the HEVC-compressed image data entirely in your browser's memory and outputs a raw PNG blob. This works on all browsers, not just Safari, with no server involvement.
Step 2: Canvas Re-encoding to Your Chosen Format
The decoded PNG is loaded onto an HTML5 canvas and then re-encoded to your chosen output format (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, etc.) using the browser's native canvas API. The result is downloaded directly to your device with no cloud storage involved.
HEIC to JPG, PNG, or WebP: Which Format Is Right?
HEIC to JPG
The most popular choice. JPG is universally supported on all platforms, devices, and applications. It produces compact files that are easy to share via email, messaging apps, and social media. Recommended for most everyday photo-sharing use cases.
HEIC to PNG
Choose PNG when you need lossless quality for archiving, printing, or professional editing. PNG files are larger than JPG but preserve every pixel at full fidelity with no compression artifacts.
HEIC to WebP
WebP is the best choice for web publishing. It offers smaller file sizes than JPG at comparable quality, with support for transparency. All modern browsers support WebP, making it ideal for embedding iPhone photos on websites.
Frequently Asked Questions About HEIC Conversion
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Apple switched to HEIC as the default photo format in iOS 11 because it saves roughly 50% storage compared to JPG at the same quality. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible to save photos as JPG instead, but this will increase storage usage.
Does Windows support HEIC natively?
Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files if you install the free HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. However, most Windows applications and websites still cannot read HEIC files. Converting to JPG is the most reliable solution for Windows compatibility.
What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the standard defined by MPEG. HEIC is Apple's implementation of HEIF that uses the HEVC codec for image compression. HEIF can also use other codecs like AVC. In practice, .heic and .heif files from Apple devices are identical and our converter handles both.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded to a server?
No. All HEIC decoding and conversion happens entirely within your browser using the heic2any JavaScript library. Your photos never leave your device, are never uploaded to any server, and are never stored or shared. This makes our converter completely safe for personal and private photos.
